Parking Lot/Trailhead

Parking is just alongside the easement on this road. There is a gate that should be locked that prevents you from parking closer to the cave. It is a short walk to the cave. Just follow the road and you will come across a boardwalk on your right.

Cave

The trail is an easy, short walk to the cave and is very easy to find. There are signs along the boardwalk about the history and animals in this location. There are more hiking trails in this area that we didn’t explore. Head back to your car the same way you came.

Enchanted Weekend in Bankhead

Enchanted Weekend in Bankhead

Bankhead National Forest is a land of mystery and enchantment.  Every canyon is filled with magic and will keep you captive.

We took this overnight trip in mid-October and caught some amazing fall foliage! Here’s our favorite website for fall foliage predictions so you can plan a fall trip anywhere in the continental US!

Long weekend in Brevard? Follow our footsteps! Above is a Map of places we visited!

Sipsey Creek Farm

We stayed at an awesome “glamp-site” that came with pretty much everything we needed including a small kitchen, bathrooms, shower, BEDS, etc. We highly recommend staying here.
Airbnb Link

Mize Mills and Turkeyfoot Falls

Mize Mills Falls is one of the many amazing waterfalls in Bankhead. We have a guide here we highly suggest checking out!

Natural Bridge

Natural Bridge is the longest rock arch east of the Rockies and its right here in Alabama! We have a guide here, but it is absolutely not necessary for your visit.

Caney Creek Falls (Bonus)

View of Caney Creek Falls in Bankhead National Forest Alabama

We didn’t venture here on our trip, but if you get a chance, this is well worth checking out! You should read the guide here.

Day 2: Breakfast and pack up. Hike on the property to see the caves and waterfall (which we didn’t have time to make it to!).

We were pressed for time, but if you have more time, I suggest looking at visiting Kinlock Falls and Caney Creek Falls. Both are fairly family-friendly and absolutely beautiful!

Fall Hiking Essentials

Fall Hiking Essentials

Thank you to Sparrow Drone (Gerrit Burke) for taking the above picture of me while we were out hiking one day! Instagram Website

Essentials for Summer Hiking
Fall Hiking is one of the best times to find amazing views in Alabama. Typically the waterfalls are not running full force, but the cooling weather and changing colors of the trees is enough incentive for anyone to want to get out and hike.

There are essentials you need for fall hiking, but it’s important to remember the difference between every hiking trip when planning on what to bring. In the deep south, falls can vary from incredibly hot (100F+) to incredibly cold (below freezing). Its also hurricane season which means we can get weeks of rain as well as weeks where we have blue skies and low humidity.  Below are my gear suggestions for a perfect fall hiking trip.

This list can be found on Amazon
Men’s Essentials Click Here
Women’s Essentials Click Here

Find These Essentials Here (Men’s) (Women’s)

We’ve split the list into men’s and women’s lists. Non-clothing items overlap and are in both lists!

Above is a list of everything you need for summer hiking. Below is the reasoning behind each item.

A backpack is essential for carrying your gear. If the backpack is too small then you won’t have enough space to store all your equipment. If its too large it’ll just be inconvenient and get in your way. I suggest around a 22L backpack. This size also works great as a “personal item” when flying.

Choosing the right sock is incredibly important. Depending on your hike you could be going through nice dry areas with flat easy terrain, a hot humid mucky swamp hike, or rocky mountains through streams. Smartwool socks are incredibly comfortable. Smartwool has several socks with different thicknesses that will be perfect no matter what fall weather throws at you. They are incredibly comfortable and out of all the clothing on this list, I would suggest buying these first.

Good underwear is the next article of clothing that I suggest buying first. Saxx and Exofficio are my go-to brands for hiking. These underwear are incredibly comfortable and yet very breathable. They are a bit pricey for a single pair, but they are an absolute game-changer in the outdoors.

Hiking shoes are very important. You need to choose a boot with a solid grip. Of all the hiking boots we’ve owned we’ve found that Keens and Solomons hiking boots offer great support as well as the best grip. These shoes even can grip to slippery, wet rocks.

Make sure you stay hydrated! A nice Hydration pack gives you easy access to water as well as a convenient way to store water in your backpack. You can pack 3 liters without a clunky bottle. Pair it with a backpack with a pouch for a hydration pack and the water is always available on the trail when you want it.

Always keep a First Aid Kit on hand!

Mosquitoes aren’t as bad in the fall months, but still can get you which can leave you with an incredibly annoying and can leave you with a not so-pleasant hike. We suggest packing 100% deet. That way your pack stays light and you still have the bug spray you need to keep the mosquitoes away.

Water is always important. The water filter we suggest is light and easy to use. It can also be connected directly to your hydration pack allowing you to quickly fill the hydration pack with river water and have it filtered as you’re drinking it.

We love our Prana pants. They are incredibly comfortable, stretch in all the right places, and are durable. Really most any pants will do, but if you want to stay comfortable on the trail, Prana is the way to go (yes even for the guys!).

Don’t go out of your way for an expensive t-shirt. Make sure it’s not cotton and you’ll be fine. Focus on your socks and underwear. It’ll be a much more comfortable hike if you do! If you have the money, we love our Mountain Hardware, Colombia, and Patagonia t-shirts!

The brand again is not important. My favorite is my Khul Fleece but really any pull-over will work. Just make sure you plan for the weather that day!

    Always know where you are.

All of these essentials are easily found online. Click below for the men’s and woman’s lists I personally put together on Amazon.

    Rock House Caves and Bluffs

    Rock House Caves and Bluffs

    Difficulty: Moderate
    Distance: <.25 mile
    Entrance Fee: Free

Rock House Cave and Bluff is a Cave and Bluffs located in Wheeler Wildlife Refuge along the Tennessee River between Decatur, AL and Huntsville, AL. It is a fantastic short walk with a unique cave. It is a moderate hike with rocky paths and uneven footing.

According to Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge (Facebook dated Feb 2021), entering the caves in Wheeler is prohibited due to the endangered gray bats. Full post at the end of the guide.

Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge Rules and Regulations

Planning on hiking in the fall? Here’s the essentials

Rock House Cave and Bluffs is located about 25 minutes southwest of Huntsville on the Tennessee River.

There is not a marked trail. When we went there were slight signs of a social trail (meaning that the ground had been made into a trail from several people walking over the same spot). This trail did not take us to the bottom of the cliffs.

Google Maps Rock House Cave and Bluffs or look at our map above!

    Parking/Trailhead

Parking is just along the road easement. There is a gate you will be walking past. Do not block the gate.

    Trailhead/Trail

There isn’t a marked trailhead nor really a trail. You’ll be walking through the opening in the fence (pictured). There are signs telling you to stay off of the top of the bluffs. After you walk between the opening in the fence, you will go right, following the cliff until you can scramble down the hill in order to get to the bottom of the bluffs. After you get to the bottom you’ll make your way back to the bottom of the bluffs heading following the cliff back the way you came, except this time at the bottom of the cliff. See the interactive map for more details. There isn’t a trail and the ground is uneven and rocky while changing elevation.

    Cave

There are several caves at the bottom of the bluffs. Please note that entering the caves is not allowed. See the post from Wheeler NWR below! When you are done, head out the same way you came in. Follow the bottom of the bluff line until you can find your way up and then follow the bluff line back until you exit through the fence.

    Brevard, NC

    Brevard, NC

Brevard is an incredibly beautiful place. There is beautiful scenery anywhere you go.

We traveled Early October and caught pre-peak fall foliage! Here’s our favorite website for fall foliage predictions so you can plan a fall trip anywhere in the continental US!

Hiking in the fall can leave you wondering what you should wear and bring. Here’s what we suggest.

Long weekend in Brevard? Follow our footsteps! Above is a Map of places we visited!

    Brevard, NC

Brevard is a small cozy college town full of restaurants, coffee shops, and antiques. We stayed at an AirBnb within walking distance of the downtown strip.

Photo Credit: Travis K Witt from Wikipedia

    Cullasaja Falls

Cullasaja Falls was one of our few stops on our way to Brevard. Parking for this waterfall is just a small pull-off on the side of a very narrow winding road. Be very careful here. It’s a scramble to get to the bottom of the waterfall and the dirt is very loose the whole way down. It’s easy to lose your footing and fall.

    Dry Falls

Dry Falls is definitely not dry. We also stopped here on our drive into Brevard. Its a beautiful 1 drop waterfall. Views from above are handicap accessible and there is a walkway with stairs to down and underneath the falls. Parking costs a few bucks. Be sure to bring cash. They have an option to pay online, but there isn’t enough cell service to bring up the website.

    Whitewater Falls

    Must See:

Upper Whitewater Falls is an astounding 411′ waterfall and is the tallest waterfall east of the Rockies. There is a parking lot off of the main road with a concrete walkway. If you park on the main road and are scaling a wall, you’re at the wrong spot (though its a beautiful view). Its a short 0.2 mile hike to a view of the waterfall. Be sure to take the stairs down to an even better view of the waterfall!

    Rainbow Falls and Turtleback Falls

    MUST SEE:

Rainbow Falls and Turtleback Falls are 2 waterfalls located in Gorges State Park, NC. It’s a 4-mile round trip hike and is of moderate difficulty.

    Toxaway Falls

Toxaway Falls is just a quick stop along the highway. It’s worth the stop, but not much to do here.

    Looking Glass Falls

    MUST SEE:

Looking Glass Falls is a very popular waterfall to visit. It’s crowded, so be sure to get there early. Parking is along the road. There’s no hiking required for this waterfall.

    Moore Cove Falls

Moore Cove Falls is a 2-mile roundtrip hike. It’s a nice easy to moderate hike to a waterfall.

    Sliding Rock Falls

Sliding Rock Falls is exactly as it sounds, a rock you can slide down. Go and swim for a bit or just enjoy the views. The entrance fee is $4 per person. This place does take credit cards.

    Log Hollow and Discovery Falls

If you want to get off the beaten path and go into the woods, this is a great hike. The road is a gravel road and is about 1.5 miles round trip. There are other waterfalls along this road that we did not visit, but if you’re feeling adventurous I highly recommend looking for them!

    Blue Ridge Parkway

Blue Ridge Parkway meanders through the Appalachian mountains providing incredible views of the valleys around.

    Our Itinerary

Day 1: Drive to Brevard, NC. Leave in the morning and stop at Cullasaja Falls, Dry Falls, and Whitewater Falls on the way in. Check into AirBnB and walk around downtown.

Day 2: Spend half of the day visiting waterfalls in Pisgah National Forest. Visit Looking Glass Falls, Moore Cove Falls, Sliding Rock Falls, and Log Hollow Falls. Spend the second half of the day enjoying Blue Ridge Parkway stopping at every view we pass.

Day 3: Head to Gorge’s State Park and visit Rainbow Falls and Turtleback Falls. Spend the rest of the day antique shopping. Enjoy the town’s food and hospitality.

    Day 4: Drive home.

    Cost

Gas from Huntsville to Brevard and back: 710 Miles / 20 miles per gallon * $3 per gallon = $106.50

    3 nights in Brevard AirBnB: Abount $100/night * 3 nights = $300

Driving around Brevard and seeing the waterfalls: 50 Miles / 20 miles per gallon * $3 per gallon = $7.50

    Total: $414.00 for 4Days/2 adults
